The only thing you need to do to start building your own solar projects is to figure out how much electricity you will need. Don’t worry, it’s easy. Most home owners make the mistake of thinking they have a need for all the power they will produce. But really, if you only need a few thousand watts then you won’t need a whole bunch of panels.

For the average residential solar projects, you will need about four panels. For very large power needs, you may need up to eight panels. It’s important to realize that you don’t need to have a ton of power, but if you do, you might as well start making some profit.

The second step is to lay out all of the panels correctly. This means you need to be familiar with the terminology and work with your hands. The way to do this is to make sure you draw it on paper and then tape it to the wall to see what looks best. You want to make sure you place them where the sun shines most often so you can get the most use out of them.

You’ll also want to find out where the ground is that you can put your panels down. This is crucial because you won’t want to be sitting in the shade when the sun is doing its thing. If you are able to find a spot with a good deal of sun during the day, that would be ideal. If you cannot find one, then just put down the panels where you can get enough sun to provide you with a good amount of power.

Now you need to take an additional step and measure the length of your roof. If you have a house with double-hung roof, you will need to get a second sheet of paper and do this. This will give you a precise measurement of the length of your roof, that you will need.
